Lunch and Learn: Assisted Outpatient Treatment

Workshop Description:

Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) is the practice of providing community-based treatment under court order to individuals with severe mental illness caught in the “revolving doors” of the mental health and criminal justice systems. Studies demonstrate that when adequately funded and carefully implemented, AOT can dramatically improve quality of life and reduce hospitalizations and arrests for its target population. Legislative reforms and federal funding have expanded the opportunity to make AOT a routine “tool in the toolkit” of the Cuyahoga County mental health system.

This presentation will include a basic orientation on AOT and the role it serves in a fully functional system of care.  In addition to giving local advocates and family members a better understanding of AOT, participants will also be able to identify ways they can help to sustain and improve a local AOT program that prioritizes individual and family engagement.
*THIS SESSION WILL BE RECORDED*

Presenter Information:

Betsy Johnson serves as the Policy Advisor for the Treatment Advocacy Center. Prior to joining TAC, she was the Associate Executive Director at NAMI Ohio for over ten years and spearheaded passage of S.B. 43, Ohio’s Assisted Outpatient Treatment law.  Betsy reached out to TAC for assistance after five “NAMI Mommies” approached her to ask for help in getting the law changed so they could get their adult children the help they needed to get out of the revolving door of hospitalization and incarceration. After the law passed unanimously, Betsy joined TAC so she could work full time on a program she had grown to love.

Because Betsy resides in Ohio, she is able to work closely with counties throughout the state to implement new AOT programs and enhance those already in existence.  Additionally, she is in a position to help communities individually and collectively overcome barriers to implementation and identify opportunities to maximize the effectiveness of their programs. As a result, Ohio is at the forefront of innovation when it comes to AOT, often leading the way for the rest of the country.

As an advocate and family member with loved ones with untreated mental illness, Betsy understands the frustration, pain and hopefulness that many family members face when seeking help for someone who is unable to recognize their need for treatment.  It is this perspective that she brings to the TAC implementation team.

We have a few tips about how to make your participation in virtual NAMI programming as easy and seamless as possible for you.

  • Need WiFi access? Free WiFi is available at various locations in Cuyahoga County, click the link below to search for a free mobile hotspot in your neighborhood:

https://cuyahoga.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=de47f9c57f7c45349f6d97abfe06bc9e

  • Need a quiet place to join? Take a stroll and connect from your phone while you get a bit of exercise, or join from a park bench in a pretty location.  Connect from your tablet or laptop of your local library parking lot (libraries still have their free WiFi on!).  NAMI programs are totally portable, and you can take your course while you get some space for yourself.
